Psalm 9
1 I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works.
1 I will give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my | whole | heart; ||
I will speak of | all thy | 3 marvellous | works. ||
2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
2 I will be | glad • and re- | joice in • thee; ||
yea, my songs will I make of thy | Name, O | thou Most | Highest. ||
3 When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence.
3 While mine enemies are | driven | back, ||
they shall | fall and | perish • at thy | presence. ||
4 For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right.
4 For thou hast maintained my | 3 right and my | cause; ||
thou art set in the | throne that | judgest | right. ||
5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever.
5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen, and de- | stroyed • the un- | godly; ||
thou hast put out their | name for | 3 ever and | ever. ||
6 O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them.
6 O thou enemy, thy destructions are come to a per- | pet•ual | end; ||
even as the cities which thou hast destroyed, * whose me- | mor•ial is | perished | with them. ||
7 But the Lord shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment.
7 But the Lord shall en- | dure for | ever; ||
he hath also pre- | pared his | seat for | judgment. ||
8 And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.
8 For he shall judge the | world in | righteous•ness, ||
and minister true | judgment | 3 unto the | people. ||
9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
9 The Lord also will be a de- | fence • for the op- | pressed, ||
even a | 3 refuge in | due • time of | trouble. ||
10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.
10 And they that know thy Name will put their | trust in | thee; ||
for thou, Lord, hast | never | failed • them that | seek thee. ||
11 Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.
† 11 O | praise the | Lord ||
which dwelleth in Sion; * | show the | people • of his | doings. ||
12 When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.
12 For when he maketh inquisition for | blood, • he re- | membereth • them, ||
and for- | getteth • not the com- | plaint • of the | poor. ||
13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death:
13 Have mercy upon me, O Lord; * consider the trouble which I suffer of | them that | hate me, ||
thou that liftest me | up • from the | gates of | death; ||
14 That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation.
14 That I may show all thy praises within the gates of the | 3 daughter of | Sion: ||
I will re- | joice in | thy sal- | vation. ||
15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken.
15 The heathen are sunk down in the | pit • that they | made; ||
in the same net which they hid | privi•ly | 3 is their foot | taken. ||
16 The Lord is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.
16 The Lord is known to | exe•cute | judgment; ||
the ungodly is trapped in the | 3 work of his | own | hands. ||
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.
17 The wicked shall be | turned • to de- | struction, ||
and all the | people | that for•get | God. ||
18 For the needy shall not alway be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish for ever.
18 For the poor shall not | alway • be for- | gotten; ||
the patient abiding of the | meek • shall not | perish • for | ever. ||
19 Arise, O Lord; let not man prevail: let the heathen be judged in thy sight.
19 Up, Lord, and let not man have the | upper | hand; ||
let the | 3 heathen be | 3 judged in thy | sight. ||
20 Put them in fear, O Lord: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.
20 Put them in | fear, O | Lord, ||
that the heathen may | know them•selves to | be but | men. ||
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
