Psalm 59
1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.
1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O God; * defend me from 3 them | that rise | up a•gainst me. ||
2 O deliver me from the wicked doers, and | save me • from the | blood•thirsty | men. ||
2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.
3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord.
3 For lo, they lie | waiting • for my | soul; ||
the mighty men are gathered against me, without any offence or | fault of | me, O | Lord. ||
4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.
4 They run and prepare themselves with- | out my | fault; ||
arise thou | 3 therefore to | help me, • and be- | hold. ||
5 Thou therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.
5 Stand up, O Lord God of hosts, thou God of Israel, * to | visit • all the | heathen, ||
and be not merciful unto them that of- | fend • of ma- | licious | wicked•ness. ||
6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
6 They go to and fro in the evening, * they grin like a dog, and run a- | bout • through the | city. ||
7 Behold, they speak with their mouth, and swords are in their | lips; * for | who doth | hear? ||
7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?
8 But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.
8 But thou, O Lord, shalt | have them • in de- | rision, ||
and thou shalt | laugh • all the | 3 heathen to | scorn. ||
9 Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.
9 My strength will I a- | scribe • unto | thee; ||
for | thou • art the | 3 God of my | refuge. ||
10 The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.
10 God showeth me his | goodness | plenteous•ly; ||
and God shall let me see my de- | sire up- | on mine | ene•mies. ||
11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.
11 Slay them not, lest my | 3 people for- | get it; ||
but scatter them abroad among the people, * and put them | down, O | Lord • our de- | fence. ||
12 For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak.
12 For the sin of their mouth, and for the words of their lips, * they shall be | taken • in their | pride: ||
and why? * their | talk is • of | 3 cursing and | lies. ||
13 Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah.
13 Consume them in thy wrath, consume them, that | they may | perish; ||
and know that it is God that ruleth in Jacob, and | 3 unto the | ends • of the | world. ||
14 And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
14 And in the evening they will return, * grin like a dog, and will | go a•bout the | city. ||
15 They will run here and there for meat, and | grudge • if they | be not | satis•fied. ||
15 Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble.
16 As for me, I will sing of thy power, * and will praise thy mercy be- | times • in the | morning; ||
for thou hast been my defence and | refuge • in the | 3 day of my | trouble. ||
17 Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.
17 Unto thee, O my | strength, • will I | sing; ||
for thou, O God, art my | refuge, • and my | 3 merciful | God. ||
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
