Psalm 22
1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
1 My God, my God, look upon me; | why hast • thou for- | saken • me? ||
and art so far from my health, and from the | words of | my com- | plaint? ||
2 O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.
2 O my God, I cry in the day-time, | but thou | hearest • not; ||
and in the night season | also • I | take no | rest. ||
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
3 And thou continuest holy, O thou | 3 Worship of | Isra•el. ||
4 Our fathers hoped in thee; * they trusted in | thee, and | thou • didst de- | liver • them. ||
4 Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.
5 They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded.
5 They called upon | thee, • and were | holpen; ||
they put their trust in | thee, • and were | not con- | founded. ||
6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
6 But as for me, I am a | worm, and • no | man; ||
a very scorn of men, and the | outcast | of the | people. ||
7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
7 All they that see me | laugh • me to | scorn; ||
they shoot out their | lips, and | shake their | heads, saying, ||
8 He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.
8 He trusted in the Lord, that | 3 he would de- | liver • him; ||
let him de- | liver • him, | 3 if he will | have him. ||
9 But thou art he that took me out of the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.
9 But thou art he that took me out of my | mother's | womb; ||
thou wast my hope, when I hanged | yet up•on my | mother's | breasts. ||
10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.
10 I have been left unto thee ever 3 since | I was | born; ||
thou art my God | even • from my | mother's | womb. ||
11 Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.
11 O go not from me; for trouble is | hard at | hand, ||
3 and | there is | none to | help me. ||
12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.
12 Many oxen are come about me; * fat bulls of Bashan close me in on | ever•y | side. ||
13 They gape upon me with their mouths, * as it were a | ramping • and a | roaring | lion. ||
13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my | bones are • out of | joint; ||
my heart also in the midst of my body is | 3 even like | melting | wax. ||
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.
15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue | cleaveth • to my | gums, ||
and thou bringest me | 3 into the | dust of | death. ||
16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.
16 For many | dogs are • come a- | bout me, ||
and the council of the | wicked • layeth | siege a- | gainst me. ||
17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.
17 They pierced my hands and my feet: * I may 3 tell | all my | bones: ||
they stand | 3 staring and | 3 looking up- | on me. ||
18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.
18 They part my | 3 garments a- | mong them, ||
and cast | lots up- | on my | vesture. ||
19 But be not thou far from me, O Lord: O my strength, haste thee to help me.
19 But be not thou | far from • me, O | Lord; ||
thou art my | succour, | haste • thee to | help me. ||
20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.
20 Deliver my | soul • from the | sword, ||
my | darling • from the | power • of the | dog. ||
21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.
21 Save me from the | lion's | mouth; ||
thou hast heard me also from a- | mong the | horns • of the | uni•corns. ||
22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
22 I will declare thy | Name un•to my | brethren; ||
in the midst of the congre- | gation | will I | praise thee. ||
23 Ye that fear the Lord, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
23 O praise the | Lord, • ye that | fear him: ||
magnify him, all ye of the seed of Jacob; * and | fear him, • all ye | seed of | Isra•el. ||
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the low es- | tate • of the | poor; ||
he hath not hid his face from him; * but when he | called • unto | him he | heard him. ||
25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
25 My praise is of thee in the | great • congre- | gation; ||
my vows will I per- | form • in the | sight of • them that | fear him. ||
26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.
26 The poor shall | eat, • and be | satis•fied; ||
they that seek after the Lord shall praise him: * your | heart shall | live for | ever. ||
27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.
27 All the ends of the world shall remember themselves, and be | turned un•to the | Lord; ||
and all the kindreds of the | 3 nations shall | 3 worship be- | fore him. ||
28 For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations.
28 For the | kingdom • is the | Lord's, ||
and he is the | Gover•nor a- | mong the | nations. ||
29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
29 All such as be fat upon earth have | 3 eaten, and | worshipped. ||
30 All they that go down into the dust shall kneel before him; * and | no • man hath | quickened his • own | soul. ||
30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.
31 My seed shall serve him: * they shall be counted unto the | Lord for a • gener- | ation. ||
32 They shall come, * and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be | born, • whom the | Lord hath | made. ||
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
