Psalm 104
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty.
1 Praise the | Lord, • O my | soul: ||
O Lord my God, thou art become exceeding glorious; * thou art | clothed with | majes•ty and | honour. ||
2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:
2 Thou deckest thyself with light as it | were • with a | garment, ||
and spreadest out the | heavens | like a | curtain. ||
3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind:
3 Who layeth the beams of his | chambers • in the | waters, ||
and maketh the clouds his chariot, * and | walketh up•on the | wings • of the | wind. ||
4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:
4 He maketh his | angels | winds, ||
and his | minis•ters a | flaming | fire. ||
5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.
5 He laid the found- | ations • of the | earth, ||
that it | 3 never should | move at | any • time. ||
6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.
6 Thou coveredst it with the deep | like as • with a | garment; ||
the | waters | stand a•bove the | hills. ||
7 At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.
7 At thy re- | buke they | flee; ||
at the voice of thy | 3 thunder they | haste a- | way. ||
8 They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them.
8 They go up as high as the hills, and down to the | 3 valleys be- | neath; ||
even unto the | place which | thou • hast ap- | pointed • for them. ||
9 Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.
9 Thou hast set them their bounds, which they | shall not | pass, ||
neither | turn a•gain to | 3 cover the | earth. ||
10 He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills.
10 He sendeth the | springs in•to the | rivers, ||
which | run a- | mong the | hills. ||
11 They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst.
11 All beasts of the | field | drink there•of, ||
and the wild | asses | quench their | thirst. ||
12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.
12 Beside them shall the fowls of the air have their | habi- | tation, ||
and | sing a- | mong the | branches. ||
13 He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works.
13 He watereth the | hills • from a- | bove; ||
the earth is | filled • with the | 3 fruit of thy | works. ||
14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;
14 He bringeth forth | grass • for the | cattle, ||
and green | herb • for the | 3 service of | men; ||
15 And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart.
15 That he may bring | food • out of the | earth, ||
and wine that maketh | glad the | heart of | man; ||
and oil to make him a | cheerful | counte•nance, ||
and | bread to | 3 strengthen man's | heart. ||
16 The trees of the Lord are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;
16 The trees of the Lord also are | full of | sap; ||
even the cedars of | Leba•non which | he hath | planted; ||
17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house.
17 Wherein the | birds • make their | nests; ||
and the | fir-trees • are a | dwelling • for the | stork. ||
18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies.
18 The high hills are a 3 refuge | for the • wild | goats; ||
and so are the | stony | rocks • for the | conies. ||
19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.
19 He appointed the | moon for • certain | seasons, ||
and the sun | 3 knoweth his | going | down. ||
20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.
20 Thou makest darkness 3 that it | may be | night; ||
wherein all the | beasts • of the | 3 forest do | move. ||
21 The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God.
21 The lions, roaring | 3 after their | prey, ||
do | seek their | meat from | God. ||
22 The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.
22 The sun ariseth, and they get them a- | way to- | gether, ||
and | lay them | down • in their | dens. ||
23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening.
23 Man goeth | forth • to his | work, ||
and to his | 3 labour, un- | til the | evening. ||
24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.
24 O Lord, how | manifold • are thy | works! ||
in | wisdom • hast thou | made them | all; ||
25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts.
the earth is | 3 full of thy | riches. ||
25 So is the | great and | wide sea | also; ||
wherein are things | 3 creeping in- | numer•able, ||
both | small and | great | beasts. ||
26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein.
26 3 There | go the | ships, ||
and there is that leviathan, whom thou hast | made to | take his | pastime there•in. ||
27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.
27 These wait | all up•on | thee, ||
that thou mayest | give them | 3 meat in due | season. ||
28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good.
28 When thou | givest it • them, they | gather • it; ||
and when thou openest thy | hand, • they are | filled with | good. ||
29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.
29 When thou hidest thy | face, • they are | troubled: ||
when thou takest away their breath, they die, * and are | turned a- | gain • to their | dust. ||
30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.
30 When thou lettest thy breath go | forth, they • shall be | made; ||
and thou shalt re- | new the | face • of the | earth. ||
31 The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works.
31 The glorious majesty of the Lord shall en- | dure for | ever; ||
the | Lord • shall re- | 3 joice in his | works. ||
32 He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they smoke.
32 The earth shall | tremble • at the | look of • him; ||
if he do but | touch the | hills, • they shall | smoke. ||
33 I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
33 I will sing unto the Lord as | 3 long as I | live; ||
I will praise my | God • while I | have my | being. ||
34 My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.
34 And so shall my | words | please him: ||
my | joy shall | be • in the | Lord. ||
35 Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the Lord, O my soul. Praise ye the Lord.
35 As for sinners, they shall be consumed | 3 out of the | earth, ||
and the un- | godly shall | come • to an | end. ||
36 3 Praise | thou the | Lord, ||
O my | soul. | Praise the | Lord. ||
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
