Psalm 124

1 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;
1 If the Lord himself had not been on our side, | now may • Israel | say; ||
if the Lord himself had not been on our | side, when | men rose | up a•gainst us; ||
2 If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us:
2 They had | swallowed us • up a- | live; ||
when they were so | wrathful- | ly dis- | pleased • at us. ||
3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
3 Yea, the | 3 waters had | drowned us, ||
and the | 3 stream had gone | 3 over our | soul. ||
4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
4 The deep | waters • of the | proud ||
had | gone • even | 3 over our | soul. ||
5 Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
5 But | praised • be the | Lord, ||
who hath not given us over for a | prey | 3 unto their | teeth. ||
6 Blessed be the Lord, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
6 Our soul is escaped even as a bird out of the | snare • of the | fowler; ||
the snare is | broken, • and | we • are de- | livered. ||
7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
7 Our help standeth in the | Name • of the | Lord, ||
3 who | hath made | heaven • and | earth. ||
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

About the Pointing

The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
