Psalm 17
1 Hear the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.
1 Hear the right, O Lord, con- | sider • my com- | plaint, ||
and hearken unto my prayer, that | goeth • not | out of • feigned | lips. ||
2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.
2 Let my sentence come | forth • from thy | presence; ||
and let thine eyes | look up•on the | thing • that is | equal. ||
3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
3 Thou hast proved and visited mine heart in the night season; * thou hast tried me, and shalt find no | wicked•ness | in me; ||
for I am utterly purposed that my | mouth shall | not of- | fend. ||
4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.
4 As for the works of men, by the | 3 word of thy | lips ||
I have | kept me • from the | ways of • the de- | stroyer. ||
5 Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.
† 5 O hold thou | up my | goings ||
in thy | paths, • that my | footsteps | slip not. ||
6 I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.
6 I have called upon thee, O | God, for • thou shalt | hear me: ||
incline thine | ear to • me, and | hearken • unto my | words. ||
7 Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
7 Show thy | marvellous • loving- | kindness, ||
thou that art the Saviour of them which put their trust in thee, * from | such • as re- | 3 sist thy right | hand. ||
8 Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
8 Keep me as the | apple • of an | eye; ||
hide me under the shadow of thy | wings, • 9 From the un- | 3 godly, that | trouble • me; ||
9 From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.
mine enemies compass me round about, to | take a•way my | soul. ||
10 They are inclosed in their own | fat, • and their | mouth • speaketh | proud things. ||
10 They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.
11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;
11 They lie waiting in our way on every side, * watching to cast us | down • to the | ground; ||
12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, * and as it were a lion's whelp | 3 lurking in | secret | places. ||
12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
13 Arise, O Lord, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:
13 Up, Lord, disappoint him, and | cast him | down; ||
deliver my soul from the un- | godly, • by | thine own | sword; ||
14 From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.
14 Yea, by thy hand, O Lord; * from the men of the | evil | world; ||
which have their portion in this life, * whose bellies thou | 3 fillest with | thy hid | treasure. ||
15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
15 They have children 3 at | their de- | sire, ||
and leave the rest of their | substance | for their | babes. ||
16 But as for me, I shall behold thy | 3 presence in | righteous•ness; ||
and when I awake up after thy | likeness, | 3 I shall be | satis•fied. ||
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
