Psalm 107
1 O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
1 O give thanks unto the | Lord, for • he is | gracious, ||
and his | 3 mercy en- | 3 dureth for | ever. ||
2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;
2 Let them give thanks whom the | Lord • hath re- | deemed, ||
and de- | livered • from the | hand • of the | ene•my; ||
3 And gathered them out of the lands, from the east, and from the west, from the north, and from the south.
3 And gathered them | 3 out of the | lands, ||
from the east, and from the | west; • from the | north, and • from the | south. ||
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way; they found no city to dwell in.
4 They went astray in the wilderness out of the way, * and found no | 3 city to | dwell in. ||
5 Hungry and | thirsty, • their | soul | fainted • in them. ||
5 Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.
6 So they cried unto the | Lord • in their | trouble, ||
and he de- | livered • them from | their dis- | tress. ||
7 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.
7 He led them | forth • by the | right way, ||
that they might go to the | city | where they | dwelt. ||
8 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
8 O that men would therefore praise the | Lord • for his | goodness; ||
and declare the wonders that he | doeth • for the | 3 children of | men! ||
9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
9 For he satisfieth the | empty | soul, ||
and filleth the | hungry | soul with | goodness. ||
10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and iron;
10 Such as sit in darkness, and in the | 3 shadow of | death, ||
being fast | bound in | mise•ry and | iron; ||
11 Because they rebelled against the words of God, and contemned the counsel of the most High:
11 Because they rebelled against the | words • of the | Lord, ||
and lightly regarded the | counsel | of the • Most | Highest; ||
12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.
12 He also brought down their | heart through | heavi•ness: ||
they fell down, 3 and | there was | none to | help them. ||
13 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.
13 So when they cried unto the | Lord • in their | trouble, ||
he de- | 3 livered them | out of • their dis- | tress. ||
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.
14 For he brought them out of darkness, and out of the | 3 shadow of | death, ||
and | brake their | bonds in | sunder. ||
15 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
15 O that men would therefore praise the | Lord • for his | goodness; ||
and declare the wonders that he | doeth • for the | 3 children of | men! ||
16 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.
16 For he hath broken the | gates of | brass, ||
and smitten the | bars of | iron • in | sunder. ||
17 Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
17 Foolish men are plagued for their offence, and be- | 3 cause of their | wicked•ness. ||
18 Their soul abhorred all manner of meat, and they were | even | hard at • death's | door. ||
18 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.
19 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
19 So when they cried unto the | Lord • in their | trouble, ||
he de- | 3 livered them | out of • their dis- | tress. ||
20 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
20 He sent his | word, and | healed them; ||
and they were | saved from | their de- | struction. ||
21 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
21 O that men would therefore praise the | Lord • for his | goodness; ||
and declare the wonders that he | doeth • for the | 3 children of | men! ||
22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.
22 That they would offer unto him the | sacri•fice of | thanks•giving, ||
and tell | out his | works with | gladness! ||
23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
23 They that go down to the sea in ships, and occupy their | business in • great | waters; ||
24 These men see the works of the | Lord, • and his | wonders • in the | deep. ||
24 These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
25 For at his word the stormy | wind a- | riseth, ||
which | lifteth | up the | waves there•of. ||
26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
26 They are carried up to the heaven, and down a- | gain • to the | deep; ||
their soul melteth a- | way be- | cause • of the | trouble. ||
27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
27 They | reel • to and | fro, ||
and stagger like a drunken | man, • and are | at their | wit's end. ||
28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
28 So when they cry unto the | Lord • in their | trouble, ||
he de- | livereth • them | out of • their dis- | tress. ||
29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
29 For he maketh the | storm to | cease, ||
so that the | waves there- | of are | still. ||
30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
30 Then are they glad, be- | cause they • are at | rest; ||
and so he bringeth them unto the | haven | 3 where they would | be. ||
31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
31 O that men would therefore praise the | Lord • for his | goodness; ||
and declare the wonders that he | doeth • for the | 3 children of | men! ||
32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.
32 That they would exalt him also in the congre- | gation • of the | people, ||
and | praise him • in the | seat • of the | elders! ||
33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground;
33 He turneth the | floods in•to a | wilder•ness, ||
and | drieth | up the | water•springs. ||
34 A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.
34 A fruitful land | 3 maketh he | barren, ||
for the | wicked•ness of | them that | dwell there•in. ||
35 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
35 Again, he maketh the wilderness a | standing | water, ||
and | water•springs | of a • dry | ground. ||
36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation;
36 And there he | 3 setteth the | hungry, ||
that they may | build • them a | 3 city to | dwell in; ||
37 And sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.
37 That they may sow their | land, and • plant | vineyards, ||
to | yield them | fruits of | increase. ||
38 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.
38 He blesseth them, so that they | multi•ply ex- | ceeding•ly; ||
and suffereth | not their | cattle • to de- | crease. ||
39 Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.
39 And again, when they are | minished and • brought | low ||
through oppression, through | any | plague or | trouble; ||
40 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.
40 Though he suffer them to be evil en- | 3 treated through | tyrants, ||
and let them wander | 3 out of the | way • in the | wilder•ness; ||
41 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.
41 Yet helpeth he the | poor • out of | mise•ry, ||
and maketh him | households • like a | flock of | sheep. ||
42 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
42 The righteous will consider | this, • and re- | joice; ||
and the mouth of all | wicked•ness | shall be | stopped. ||
43 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.
43 Whoso is wise, will | ponder • these | things; ||
and they shall under- | stand the • loving- | kindness • of the | Lord. ||
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
