Psalm 44
1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old.
1 We have heard with our ears, O God, our | 3 fathers have | told us ||
what thou hast | done • in their | time of | old: ||
2 How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out.
2 How thou hast driven out the heathen with thy hand, and | planted • our | fa•thers in; ||
how thou hast destroyed the nations, and | made thy | people • to | flourish. ||
3 For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them.
3 For they gat not the land in possession through their | own | sword, ||
neither was it their | own | arm that | helped them; ||
4 Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.
4 But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the | 3 light of thy | counte•nance; ||
be- | cause thou | hadst a | favour • unto them. ||
5 Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.
† 5 3 Thou | art my | King, ||
O | God; * send | help • unto | Jacob. ||
6 For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.
6 Through thee will we over- | throw our | ene•mies, ||
and in thy Name will we tread them | 3 under that | rise • up a- | gainst us. ||
7 But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.
7 For I will not trust in my bow, * it is not my | sword • that shall | help me; ||
8 But it is thou that savest us from our enemies, * and | puttest them • to con- | 3 fusion that | hate us. ||
8 In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.
9 But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and goest not forth with our armies.
9 We make our boast of God | all day | long, ||
and will | praise thy | Name for | ever. ||
10 Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
10 But now thou art far off, and | puttest us • to con- | fusion, ||
and | goest • not | forth • with our | armies. ||
11 Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
11 Thou makest us to turn our | backs up•on our | ene•mies, ||
so that they which | hate us | spoil our | goods. ||
12 Thou sellest thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.
12 Thou lettest us be eaten up like sheep, and hast scattered us a- | mong the | heathen. ||
13 Thou sellest thy people for | nought, and | 3 takest no | money • for them. ||
13 Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
14 Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.
14 Thou makest us to be re- | buked • of our | neighbours, ||
to be laughed to scorn, and had in derision of | them • that are | round a- | bout us. ||
15 My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
15 Thou makest us to be a by-word a- | mong the | nations, ||
and that the | peoples | shake their | heads • at us. ||
16 For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
16 My confusion is daily before me, * and the shame of my | face hath | covered • me; ||
17 For the voice of the slanderer and blasphemer, * for the | ene•my | and a- | venger. ||
17 All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
18 Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way;
18 And though all this be come upon us, yet do we | not for- | get thee, ||
nor behave ourselves | 3 frowardly | in thy | cove•nant. ||
19 Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
19 Our heart is | not turned | back, ||
neither our | steps gone | 3 out of thy | way; ||
20 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
20 No, not when thou hast smitten us into the | place of | dragons, ||
and | covered us • with the | 3 shadow of | death. ||
21 Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
21 If we have forgotten the Name of our God, * and holden up our hands to | any • strange | god, ||
shall not God search it out? * for he knoweth the very | secrets | of the | heart. ||
22 Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
22 For thy sake also are we killed | all the • day | long, ||
and are counted as | sheep ap- | pointed • to be | slain. ||
23 Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
23 Up, Lord, why sleepest thou? * awake, and be not absent 3 from | us for | ever. ||
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and for- | 3 gettest our | miser•y and | trouble? ||
24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaveth unto the earth.
25 For our soul is brought low, even unto the dust; * our belly cleaveth | 3 unto the | ground. ||
26 Arise, and help us, and de- | liver • us, | for thy | mercy's • sake. ||
26 Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
About the Pointing
The text of the Coverdale Psalter follows the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer. The pointing, suitably adapted, is taken from Charles Macpherson, Edward C. Bairstow, and Percy C. Buck, The English Psalter (Novello & Co., 1925).
